How do I connect a Storz coupling?

The Storz couplings, also known as a Kamm lock or fire-fighting coupling, is a quick-connect device for water pipes or hoses widely used in firefighting, industrial, and agricultural applications. Due to its ease of operation, rapid connection, and reliable sealing, the Storz coupling plays a vital role in applications requiring rapid deployment of fluid transfer systems.

How the Storz Coupling Works

The Storz couplings design is based on a symmetrical "claw" structure, also known as a lug-type coupling. This means that two identical couplings can be connected without distinguishing between male and female connectors, significantly simplifying field operations. The coupling is locked by rotation, and an internal seal (gasket) ensures a fluid-tight seal.

Step-by-Step Guide to Connecting Storz Couplings

Preparation (Inspection)

  • First, ensure that the two Storz couplings to be connected match in size (e.g., threaded hose connector) and nominal diameter (e.g., DN50, DN75).

  • Check that the connector ends are clean and free of grit or other foreign matter.

  • Key Step: Check that the seal (gasket/ring) in each connector is intact and properly installed. The seal is essential for a good watertight seal.

Aligning the Couplings

Align the claws (lugs) of the two Storz couplings. Due to their symmetrical design, you only need to gently push them together.

Insert and Tighten (Locking)

  • Push the two connectors together until their ends touch.

  • Then, rotate one coupling clockwise or counterclockwise (usually to the right) until you feel the claws fully engage the other and the two joints are securely locked.

  • Typically, the locking angle is approximately 90 to 120 degrees. In some large-diameter or high-pressure applications, a special wrench may be required to assist with rotation and ensure a tight connection.

Final Check (Confirming the Connection)

  • Try to gently pull on both couplings to ensure they do not separate.

  • A properly connected Storz coupling cannot be easily pulled apart or turned by hand. This ensures that the coupling will not loosen when fluids (such as water or firefighting foam) are being transferred under high pressure.

Factors Related to Ensuring a Reliable Connection

In addition to following the correct procedures, to ensure a reliable Storz couplings connection, you must also pay attention to the following points:

  • Gaskets/O-rings: Use the correct material and size of seals. Deteriorated, damaged, or missing seals are the primary cause of leaks.

  • Material Options: Storz couplings are available in aluminum alloy, brass, or stainless steel. Selecting corrosion-resistant and pressure-resistant materials helps extend coupling life and connection reliability.

  • Maintenance: Regularly inspect and clean Storz couplings, especially the hose end fittings, to prevent foreign matter from affecting the locking and sealing effect.

Storz couplings, with their unique quick-connect mechanism, provide an efficient and reliable solution for fluid transfer. Following these simple steps ensures a secure, leak-free connection every time, safeguarding critical processes in firefighting and industrial applications.
