How to Use a Storz Locking Coupling?

The Storz Locking Coupling is a popular quick-connect coupling in water management and industrial applications, particularly in the European market. It is renowned for its unique, tool-free, quick-connect method.

The Storz Self-Locking Hose Coupling is an enhanced version of the standard Storz hose coupling, featuring an additional safety locking mechanism. This significant improvement, while retaining the original quick-connect design, significantly enhances the connection strength, preventing accidental disconnection during use, thereby improving operational safety and reliability.

This coupling features a double-sleeve construction. During hose assembly, the operator slides the hose over the upper and lower exhaust pipes and securely secures them with hose clamps (or hose clamps). This design ensures a secure and reliable connection, making it particularly suitable for high-pressure or high-flow applications.

This series of couplings is typically available in large sizes to meet the needs of firefighting, large-scale irrigation, and industrial fluid transfer applications, while smaller sizes can be custom-made to meet specific customer requirements.

How to Use a Storz Locking Coupling

Connecting with Storz Locking Couplings (including the Self-Locking version) is simple and quick, a key reason for their popularity. Here are the basic steps:

  • Prepare and Match: Ensure the two Storz fittings match in size (usually designated by the distance between the jaws, such as C-size or B-size) and type (e.g., with hose tail or thread).

  • Align and Insert: Align the jaws of the two Storz locking fittings toward each other, then insert.

  • Locking (Twist): Twist one fitting clockwise (or counterclockwise, depending on the design) approximately 120 degrees (or one-third of a turn) until the two fittings are securely engaged. Standard Storz fittings rely on an internal sealing ring to achieve a tight seal.

  • Activate the Safety Lock (Self-Locking Only): For Storz self-locking hose fittings, ensure the attached safety lock is locked into place, either automatically or manually, after twisting into position. This step is important, as it provides additional security and prevents accidental separation due to vibration or pressure fluctuations.

Applications for Storz Locking Couplings

Due to their robust construction and quick-connect features, Storz Locking Couplings are widely used in a variety of applications requiring quick and reliable hose connections:

  • Fire protection systems: This is one of the most popular applications for Storz locking couplings, often used to connect fire hoses.

  • Irrigation systems: They enable quick assembly and disassembly of large pumps and pipes in agriculture and horticulture.

  • Industrial applications: They are used to transport fluids or media such as slurries, cement pastes, or industrial wastewater in chemical plants, construction sites, or temporary pipelines.
